title: "Architecture: Acting on What You See"
description: "Why Acting on What You See belongs inside Reality: action answerable to what has been learned, with Bond sustaining the cooperation involved."
aiSummary: "Architecture page for Reality -> Acting on What You See. Derives the category from the question of what action is warranted by what has been learned. Control turns perception into unaccountable imposition; Decay leaves insight inert. The Range form is intervention governed by evidence, proportionate to the problem, and answerable to those who bear its effects. Binding limits require justified authority, consideration of less restrictive alternatives, and challenge and revision. Wu Wei and Satyagraha retain their specific source commitments without defining the limits of every warranted intervention. Ziran remains within Wu Wei."

## Why This Category Exists

The Reality discipline cannot stop at accurate perception. A person can read a system well, name the real constraint, identify the incentive, see the harm, and still fail because nothing follows from the seeing.

Earlier chapter language leaned too heavily toward handing action to Bond. Bond does own the discipline of sustaining cooperation through cost: how people remain in relation, repair rupture, calibrate trust, and keep shared action alive. There is also a Reality question: what action is warranted by what has been learned?

Acting on What You See names that action discipline. Its object is not cooperation itself. Its object is the relation between perception and movement. The category asks whether action is governed by what reality has disclosed, or whether it is governed by impatience, ideology, self-protection, spectacle, or endless postponement.

Reality needs an action discipline because insight can fail by becoming inert.

## The Range Vantage

The Control failure is unaccountable imposition. A person sees something, or thinks they do, and treats that sight as sufficient authority to command. Intervention overrides local knowledge, dismisses consent and objection, or persists after evidence shows that it is causing harm. The model is protected from the people and conditions that could correct it.

The Decay failure is inert seeing. The person keeps observing, refining, qualifying, waiting for perfect conditions, or deferring all movement to some later collective process. The sight remains true enough, but it never obtains practical force. Seeing becomes a substitute for action.

The Range form is intervention governed by evidence, proportionate to the problem, and answerable to those who bear its effects. A binding limit may be warranted. Whoever imposes it must justify their authority, show why a less restrictive action would not adequately address the harm, and keep the decision open to challenge and revision.

A limit on extraction from a shared watershed can protect the resource while constraining someone who opposes the allocation. That opposition must remain speakable and receive an answer. The decision has to account for whose needs it protects, who carries the loss, and how its effects will be reviewed. Effective enforcement alone does not establish legitimacy; disagreement alone does not establish Control.

Enforcing a limit does not establish agreement with it. People must remain able to question its reasons and authority without losing standing for doing so. An objection that shows why the limit is unwarranted must be able to change the decision. Those imposing the limit must also justify losses that later review cannot repair. [Productive Conflict](/inheritance/receiving-disagreement-well/productive-conflict#when-disagreement-remains) explains how to reach an accountable decision when disagreement remains and every feasible choice imposes a loss.

## The Anti-Passivity Caveat

Restraint still has to leave room for sufficient action. A limit that exists only on paper may leave the harm untouched.

The term "non-forcing" can be misread as a refined excuse for inaction. That would collapse the category into Decay. Read the available choices, including the consequences of delay, and choose an action whose scope and cost can be justified. Keep observing after acting: a warranted intervention can outlive the conditions that warranted it.

[Wu Wei](/inheritance/acting-on-what-you-see/wu-wei) and [Satyagraha](/inheritance/acting-on-what-you-see/satyagraha) both require the anti-passivity caveat. Wu Wei is action in contact with conditions, removing excess force while choosing a sufficient move. Satyagraha is disciplined nonviolent action under cost, preserving its commitment against coercing the opponent. Those specific commitments belong to their profiles. The category also has to admit warranted interventions that neither profile claims to supply.

## Relationship To Bond

Bond begins where action has to be sustained across people. Acting on What You See can involve other people, but its first question is not "how do we cooperate?" Its first question is "what action is faithful to what has become visible?"

If all action is handed to Bond, Reality becomes contemplative. If Reality absorbs all cooperative sustaining, Bond loses its own object. The cleaner architecture is sequential and overlapping:

- Reality develops and tests our understanding of what is happening.
- Acting on What You See asks what movement that understanding warrants.
- Bond asks how people sustain truthful, trustworthy cooperation through the costs that movement creates.

This sequence distinguishes the questions being asked. A cooperative relationship may already be what made that understanding possible, and its demands continue while an action is considered.

Satyagraha sits near the boundary. Its truth-force belongs here; its constructive program, opponent relationship, and repair of political community cross into Bond. This profile should therefore carry explicit cross-reference obligations rather than pretending the practice belongs to only one discipline.

## Why Ziran Is Carried Within Wu Wei

Wu Wei and Satyagraha are the category's two published profiles. Ziran is carried within Wu Wei because it supplies a source concept for that practice. A separate profile would need to show a distinct usable contribution beyond naming naturalness apart from the action that responds to it.

That judgment remains open to revision if a later profile establishes such a contribution.
